Description: ABOUT THE STEWARDSHIP SITE The 4,000-acre Roxborough State Park, just a short drive southwest of Denver, is best known for its dramatic red sandstone formations, distinct plant habitats, and a host of wildlife including elk, eagles, and black bears. Visitors can take in all of Roxborough's remarkable geology and biodiversity via a series of trails, including the popular South Rim Trail. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK Volunteers will hike about a half mile to reach the project location on the South Rim Trail.Unfortunately, the combination of heavy use and substantial rain has caused erosion and compromised the trail. Volunteers will work to reestablish a trail that is wide enough to allow users to have a safe and comfortable experience. A free light breakfast and lunch will be provided. This project way a continuation of last season's efforts to restore the trail. Groups from Newmont Mining and the Magnolia Hotel joined local Denver Metro volunteers to install 83 check steps and improve a half mile of trail. Their efforts will help stop erosion and create a safer and more enjoyable hiking experience for volunteers. Volunteers enjoyed lunch donated by Olive Garden. Successes and Challenges: This was a very successful project with an experienced project team and great partner. This was VOC's 4th year hosting a project at Roxbrough and the project went very smooth. Amy Knopp the park ranger we have been working with over the past 4 years is leaving the park and we will need to cultivate a new relationship with her replacement.
