Description

Start Date-End Date: 08/15/2015-08/16/2015 Land Manager Office: USFS - Dillon Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Ken Waugh Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Build a sustainable trail to enhance recreational opportunities in the famed Summit County. Description: ABOUT THESTEWARDSHIP SITE The Tenderfoot Mountain trail system, near Dillon, currently boasts more than 400 non-motorized trails that are steep and not sustainable. Many of the trails in the area, which were created by riders and have not been officially maintained, travel through beautiful sage, aspen, and pine forests. During the summer months, wildflowers such as columbine, lupine, and mountain larkspur are quite visible. The purpose of this project is to provide a more managed system of trails that are open to both motorized and non-motorized uses. ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER WORK Volunteers will work alongside local user groups to build roughly one mile of new trail that will be part of the Tenderfoot Mountain Trail, which will be a 5-mile long trail connecting the Straight Creek Road with the Frey Gulch Road. The new trail will pass over the top of Tenderfoot Mountain and be part of the 21-mile Tenderfoot Mountain Motorcycle Trail System that is expected to be completed by 2017.This system will be open to motorcycles while also providing a fantastic recreational opportunity for hikers and mountain bikers. Free meals and camping provided. OTHER WAYS TO HELP It's not all sweat and toil! There are lots of ways you can participate on project days, including as an assistant crew chef. Assistant crew chefs have a fun, vital, and very appreciated role on the project team - keeping volunteers happy and well-fed! Please emailSteve Wallfor more information. VOC partnered with the Dillion Ranger District Forest Service to construct this multi-use trail. The trail will allow dirt bikers, hikers, and mountain bikers to access the top of Tenderfoot Mountain. This project is part of a much larger trail network to be constructed on the mountain and will be completed in the coming years. On Saturday we hosted 55 volunteers and Sunday the numbers dropped considerably to around 20. The low project turnout was due to a poor response from the OHV community. After the project was complete we built about 2200 ft of trail, almost a half mile.
