The groups paired off and spread out along the road. After lunch, the group worked on a further section of road closer to the buffalo pasture and lunch site. A mile High Youth Corps chainsaw team worked alongside us as well, helping to fell trees and manage the thicker trunks. Successes and Challenges: The teams were able to successfully thin the tree population as well as other forms of fire mitigation. Approximately 987.77 yards of roadside were worked on. The biggest challenge was the physical toll of hand saws, but the group handled it very well, up until the last hour or so of the project, keeping a steady pase and strong work. Lessons Learned: The nature of the work was unfamiliar and exciting to the groups, although they had done trail work and other stewardship in the past.Explaining the work and use of the project went a long way, and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves, the more competetive kids even starting counts to compare between teams. This lead to more rapid work, but they sometimes were more sloppy, although other groups less inclined to fell trees picked up the slack on clearing the lower branches of the trees. Special Notes: Both groups were from out of state on church sponsored service/mission trips. Stewardship Education: Fire mitigation and the effect on watersheds, as well as the importance of stewardship were explained by staff on site. Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Description of Accidents/Incidents: One member of the Iowa Church lost his balance on the hillside and fell, rolling and catching his knee on a stump, opening a gash. He was promptly cleaned up, bandaged and taken to the nearby urgent care for stitches. He was surprisingly very calm, and upon returning expressed a strong desire to resume work.
