Description

Start Date-End Date: 09/17/2016-09/18/2016 Land Manager Office: CPW - Lory State Park Land Manager Contact: Cameron Landis Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: A Fort Collins-area favorite, restore this heavily used and beloved trail. Description: About the Stewardship Site Located in Lory State Park, the 1.7-mile Arthur's Rock Trail winds through fragrant Ponderosa and open meadows to the summit of Arthur's Rock. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Horsetooth Reservoir and the City of Fort Collins from an elevation of 6,780 feet. About the Volunteer Experience Unfortunately, the popularity of Arthur's Rock Trail comes with a price. After years of heavy human traffic, the trail is experiencing severe drainage issues that are affecting the landscape adjacent to the trail. Volunteers will repair the trail by closing and restoring shortcuts and social trails - or unofficial, unsustainable trails that were created by recreationalists. Work will include constructing rock walls and repairing and/or installing waterbars and other erosion control structures. Moderate-to-heavy rock work will be involved. As an added bonus, volunteers on this project will receive a FREE T-shirt donated by REI! Note: This is a camping optional project. Camping will be provided for volunteers who wish to stay overnight, but no VOC project team will be onsite overnight. Camping volunteers are responsible for their own food. If you wish to camp, contact Dan at 303-715-1010, ext. 117. A light breakfast will be provided Saturday and Sunday. About the Overall Impact By repairing shortcuts, closing social trails, and installing erosion control structures, volunteers will make Arthur's Rock Trail safer and more enjoyable for users, as well as help prevent future erosion damage for many years to come.
