Description

Start Date-End Date: 06/17/2016-06/17/2016 Land Manager Office: USFS - Clear Creek Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Ralph Bradt Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Restore a popular trail while enjoying a wilderness experience close to Denver. Description: About the Stewardship Site More and more people are using the backcountry areas closest to Denver, especially when it comes to hiking day trips. The Mount Evans Wilderness, just 30 miles west of Denver and home to two popular fourteeners, is a good example. As trail use increases in this pristine wilderness area - in which ancient Bristlecone pines, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats are common sights - the volunteers who help take care of the trails are even more in demand. About the Volunteer Experience Volunteers will address high priority maintenance needs on the Mount Evans Wilderness Area's Beaver Meadows Trail, which climbs through an open forest and grassy meadow, and offers access to the eastern portion of the Wilderness. Volunteers will work in a small, intimate crew to correct significant trail erosion issues and install drainage features to prevent further erosion, among other tasks. The worksite is within a half mile of the Beaver Meadows trailhead. About the Overall Impact This is the first of two VOC projects on the Beaver Meadows Trail in 2016, in which volunteers will provide trail maintenance and erosion control for a vastly improved trail experience for many years to come.
