Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/18/2016-07/22/2016 Land Manager Office: USFS - South Platte Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Brandon Mitchell Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Early-bird registration will open May 1. Description: About the Stewardship Project Join us for this exciting backcountry wilderness project close to Denver! Located near Deckers, the popular Goose Creek Trail provides access into the southeast portion of the Lost Creek Wilderness. In the warmer months, the area is glittered with wildflowers and offers the best in camping, fishing in Goose Creek, and remarkable views of formations of red Pikes Peak granite. Unfortunately, the torrential rains in September 2013 triggered serious deterioration of the Goose Creek Trail and nearly three years later it still requires much restoration. About the Volunteer Experience A small group of just over a dozen volunteers will perform maintenance tasks, as well as correct areas of the trail experiencing steep grades that are subject to erosion from flooding. Work will include constructing rock drainage structures, reestablishing the surface of the trail, and cleaning out and reinforcing existing drainage structures, among other important tasks that are moderate-to-difficult in nature. Volunteers will pack in 4 miles and spend a few days living and working out of a backcountry camp! Note: Due to the backcountry nature of this project, volunteers are required to register for all five days of the project. Volunteers not registered for the entirety of the project will be removed from the registration list. About the Overall Impact The South Platte Ranger District has little staff time available to commit to trail maintenance, particularly when work needs to be done 4+ miles from the nearest trailhead. Volunteer work on this project will make a significant impact on the Goose Creek Trail for generations to come.
