Summary: Spend a lovely spring evening planting a community garden that will feed the hungry.
Description: About the Stewardship Site
Located at the historic site of Ft. Logan in Denver, Friends of the Haven is a therapeutic community shelter that provides rehabilitation services to women with addiction issues. The property has a beautiful onsite garden, which last year provided its clients with more than 1,000 pounds of organic and fresh produce.
About the Volunteer Experience
VOC is excited to team up with our long-term partner, Grow Local Colorado, to plant vegetable gardens whose purpose is to demonstrate the beauty of edible gardens, engage community participation, and inspire Denver residents to grow their own vegetable gardens. Volunteer work on this project will be fun, easy, and child-friendly. Tasks will involve preparing the garden beds, weeding, working the soil, and planting vegetable seeds and seedlings.
About the Overall Impact
The produce that volunteers will plant will mature in the fall, and at that time be donated to local organizations including food banks, homeless shelters, and families in need. Further, by growing food locally, we reduce our carbon footprint (food isn't transported thousands of miles), minimize water use, decrease soil erosion, and help develop a sustainable community. This is a great opportunity for families and kids to earn their #GardenGuru digital badge! Learn more by downloading VOC's mobile app, YourCO.

Project Summary: On Thursday, May 26th, 8 dedicated volunteers came out to Friends of the Haven near Fort Logan to help plant their vegetable garden. The Haven helps substance addicted women get back on their feet through treatment and job training. Many of the clients came out to help the volunteers plant the garden, and they were so grateful.
Successes and Challenges: The weather report was pretty bleak. There were thunderstorm, hail and tornado warnings in different parts of the metro area, so we only had 50% of volunteers show up. This did not hinder the project at all, since many of the clients from The Haven came out to help.
