Summary: Work a day, then stay and play, in the vast San Luis Valley!
Description: About the Stewardship Site
Named for quarries that provided building material for several towns in the San Luis Valley over a century ago, the Del Norte Stone Quarry area is a geologically unique and awe-inspiring outdoor playground, offering panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains.
About the Volunteer Experience
This is a unique project that combines one day of new trail construction on Saturday, followed by a day of recreation on Sunday. As such, volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring their mountain bikes, running shoes, and hiking boots! VOC kicked off the first 7-mile phase of trail construction in this area in 2013, and is working on the next 6-mile phase this year. Following a short, easy hike to the project worksite, construction tasks will range from basic to technical and can accommodate most abilities. We'll provide the meals, tools, and experienced leaders; you just need to bring your own camping gear and a willingness to work as a team and get dirty.
About the Overall Impact
The Stone Quarry trail system is part of the Bureau of Land Management's efforts to expand and diversify trail-based recreation in the San Luis Valley. These trail systems will continue to provide easy access to outdoor recreation for local residents as well as visitors from afar that come to experience the natural treasures of southern Colorado!
