Description

Start Date-End Date: 05/07/2016-05/07/2016 Land Manager Office: Windsor, Town of Land Manager Contact: Ken Kawamura Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Bring the family to restore this North Front Range park and beautify its landscape. Description: About the Stewardship Site This project will take place at the popular Oxbow Disc Golf Park and an adjacent beautiful demonstration garden. Both places provide recreation and educational spaces for the town of Windsor as well as nearby communities, including Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley. Oxbow Disc Golf Park is easily accessible by vehicle and bike. About the Volunteer Experience There will be two components to this family-friendly project that can accommodate volunteers as young as 8. At Oxbow Disk Golf Park, volunteers will remove invasive trees that negatively affect the ecosystem, and haul them to the chipper. There will also be some tasks that involve moving gravel and crusher fines (crushed rock) to repair and improve local trails. At the demonstration garden, volunteers will perform general garden prep such as tilling, hoeing, and if the weather cooperates, installing posts to build a shade garden. The purpose of a shade garden is to illustrate how a low maintenance garden can be created in an area that does not receive a significant amount of sunlight. Volunteers may also plant up to 2,500 square feet of cool season vegetables and perennial plants. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided! About the Overall Impact Removing invasive trees from the park will aid this area in returning to a more natural state and allow native flora to take root and thrive. Prepping and planting the demonstration garden will help this important community resource get ready for the spring gardening season. This garden bed not only provides healthy, local food for the community; it serves as an educational tool to teach people about the importance of local gardening. The park sees heavy use with the disc golf course, the garden and the Poudre River Trail Corridor, and the town had been waiting for the right opportunity to get many of these projects done! A few volunteers were able to significantly clean up the demonstration garden by planting flowers, removing weeds and shrubs, replacing outlining wood beams, and cleaning out a drainage ditch. Most of the volunteers worked diligently to saw, haul and chip slash 2 acres of noxious Russian Olive trees. A small trail was repaired and stairs built to on disc golf hole as well. Volunteers enjoyed lunch from Subway, and the rain held off until everyone was on their way home! Successes and Challenges: Town of Windsor was a new partner for VOC, so walking them through the process was needed. But the project turned out great, and they bought Subway sandwiches for everyone! Lessons Learned: Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: A good partner, if we will continue to do Weld County projects.
