Description

Start Date-End Date: 10/08/2016-10/08/2016 Land Manager Office: City and County of Denver - Parks and Recreation Land Manager Contact: Bob Finch Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Give back at one of Colorado's finest treasures, providing a much-loved trail with some much-needed TLC. Description: About the Stewardship Site Having gone by such names as Garden of the Angels and Garden of the Titans in its past, Red Rocks Park is one of Colorado's most impressive and iconic natural monuments. The park is aptly named for the 300 million-year-old red sandstone formations that make a spectacular backdrop for an array of activities. The project worksite is situated on the park's Trading Post Trail, a 1.5-mile loop that can be accessed via an easy hike. This is a great project opportunity for new volunteers and those wanting to learn more about trail restoration in a beautiful setting. About the Volunteer Experience Volunteers will perform much-needed maintenance and rehabilitation on a 2,000-foot section of the Trading Post Trail. Work will include installing timber steps and drainage structures, spreading crusher fine material, removing old concrete sections of trail, among other moderate tasks. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers to ensure a productive day! About the Overall Impact Due to the popularity of Red Rocks, hiking traffic is heavy throughout the year, which means that damage to the park's trails can happen fast and become widespread. Volunteers will greatly assist the park by bringing the Trading Post Trail to safe and sustainable conditions so that it can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come. Below is the information gleaned from volunteers post-project. The morning went well, turnout was great, and volunteers were organized into groups efficiently. Registration and breakfast went smoothly, even with a high volume of volunteers and limited space for equipment. The morning welcome started right on time and was brief with a talk from Bob Finch on the work. Volunteer CLM Donna did a great job of breaking up volunteers into crews quickly and efficiently, and crews launched into trail-building quickly. Weather was fantastic, with clear skies and cool temperatures in the morning. Lunch was delivered on time and volunteers were all happy and fed from a Which Wich donation. Volunteers constructed a large amount of trail, and the land managers were very happy with what was accomplished. Successes and Challenges: Successes: Turnout, lunch, morning timing and logistics, volunteer leaders took over for the PM after he left and did a great job. Challenges: Project manager was ill and couldn't stay on the project. Lessons Learned: With one staff person on a project, there is some danger if that person becomes ill, injured, etc. On this project there were a number of seasoned volunteer leaders who were easily able to take on project supervision. They did a fantastic job of making sure everything went smoothly and even communicated with the PMon the project status throughout the day via text. However, if that established leadership weren't in place, the PM would be forced to stay on the project as there would be no backup.
