Start Date-End Date: 05/07/2016-05/08/2016 Land Manager Office: BLM - San Luis Valley Land Manager Contact: Sean Noonan Funding Partner: San Luis Valley Great Outdoors - SLVGO Programmatic Partner: San Luis Valley Federal Bank Summary: Build a trail one day, then stay and play, as you enjoy picturesque views of the San Luis Valley. Description: About the Stewardship Site Named for quarries that provided building material for several towns in the San Luis Valley over a century ago, the Del Norte Stone Quarry area is a geologically unique and awe-inspiring outdoor playground, offering panoramic views of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains. About the Volunteer Experience This is a unique project that combines one day of new trail construction on Saturday, followed by a day of recreation on Sunday. As such, volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring their mountain bikes, running shoes, and hiking boots! VOC kicked off the first 7-mile phase of trail construction in this area in 2013, and is excited to begin the next 6-mile phase this year. Following a short, easy hike to the project worksite, construction tasks will range from basic to technical and can accommodate most abilities. We'll provide the meals, tools, and experienced leaders; you just need to bring your own camping gear and a willingness to work as a team and get dirty. About the Overall Impact The Stone Quarry trail system is part of the Bureau of Land Management's efforts to expand and diversify trail-based recreation in the San Luis Valley. These trail systems will continue to provide easy access to outdoor recreation for local residents as well as visitors from afar that come to experience the natural treasures of southern Colorado! The trail is part of the Stone Quarry Trail System that VOC has been contributing to since 2013. Successes and Challenges: Volunteers were way more productive than the BLM anticipated and more trail was flagged and layed out during the work day to keep up with the quick pace of construction. Wind and Snow moved in on Sunday so not that many folks stuck around for the recreation part of the project weekend. I did not have membership incintive gift. Lessons Learned: Special Notes: A happy hour was provided by Three Barrel Brewing at their brewery in Del Norte, and they also created a beer and lable specifically for VOC Volunteers that was distributed at dinner on Saturday. Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Several volunteers commented on how much they apreciated the support from the local community.
