Description: About the Stewardship Site The Lost Creek Wilderness Area, located 60 miles southwest of Denver, experienced heavy rain and flooding during the fall of 2013. The area's Wigwam Trail, which is mainly used for hiking and passes through aspen groves, wide open green meadows and several beaver ponds, sustained severe damage and requires steady repair. About the Volunteer Experience During the two planned project days, a small group of just over a dozen volunteers will perform maintenance and repair along damaged trail sections. Work may include constructing drainage and erosion control structures using rock, reestablishing tread and outslope, and cleaning out and reinforcing existing drainage structures, among other tasks. Activity requires moderate to difficult physical exertion, and volunteers can expect to hike up to 2 miles to reach the worksite. About the Overall Impact The U.S. Forest Service district that manages the Lost Creek Wilderness is limited in the staff time they can commit to trail maintenance, and often volunteers are the only way that damaged trails can be restored or maintained. The critical restoration performed on this project will ensure the Wigwam Trail's sustainability and usability for the long term.
