Project Summary: On Saturday, February 11th, 28 Cairn participants and mentors went up to Ward, Colorado, for a full-day survival skills workshop. This workshop was led by Andrew Naugle, a horticulturist with Denver Parks and Rec. In his spare time, Andrew teaches 1-5 day courses on a myriad of wilderness survival skills. For our workshop, we went through several different skills throughout the day. Our morning got off to an interesting start, when we got stuck on a steep hill coming out of Ward! With the help of some locals, and a little persistence, we were able to make it to the top! We started in the morning with some name games, which are helpful to do at every Cairn event, since we meet so infrequently. We then moved into how to be more aware of our senses, and some basics of navigation. We learned about different types of shelters, and what to build based on the resources you have available, what you are using the shelter for, and the number of people that you have. We then built a wind block shelter near our fire ring!
We spent a large chunk of the afternoon learning about fire. Andrew showed us different ways to build fire, and create sparks without the use of lighters or matches, using a bow-drill and flint and steel. We made s'mores over the fire, steeped tea using pine needles, and made wooden spoons using coals from the fire.
To round out our day, we learned about a few edible and medicinal plants, and how to stalk wildlife without being noticed, all while snow was gently falling around us.
Successes and Challenges: Andrew was a great instructor. He was patient, and time conscious. He had meticulously planned out a wonderful day for our crew, and he is very knowledgeable on a large variety of topics. This was such a cool day, and out of the norm for the Cairn program. The students gave a lot of positive feedback.
One challenge was a long day in the car, and getting stuck coming out of Ward! But, the spot that we had the workshop in was great, and I think the van time was quickly forgotten.
Lessons Learned: Include some of these more "off-beat" Cairn days! The students and mentors really enjoyed the day, and we learned some really valuable skills, as well as further bonding.
