We met with Erik Nilsen, the Natural Resource Manager for Lakewood, and he told us what the project was all about. We looked at the two different worksites that we will be in on April 15th, and exactly at what Erik wants done in those areas. We will be building rock check dams, and re-seeding the area with native grass species. After finishing the site visit, we returned to the VOC office for Crew Leader training and planning time with our project teams. Successes and Challenges: A success of the day was that the students felt really good about the final project. Erik gave them lots of detail about Green Mountain, wildfires, and what he needs to be done on the final day. A challenge for the day was doing Crew Leader training at the VOC office. It was a really warm day, so we broke into groups outside to do the training, but since there were so many people in the park, the students were pretty distracted. It would be better to run this training on the project site, so that the students are still focused. Lessons Learned: Do crew leader training on project site, and not at the VOC office. Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Erik from the City of Lakewood provided TONS of detail about wildfire ecology, native species, and trail health during the site visit.
