Project Summary: On the weekend of September 16th-17th, the 2017-2018 Cairn season kicked off with our overnight project at Cal-Wood: Education Center in Jamestown, CO! It was a beautiful weekend!. We worked alongside Angie Busby to help move cut logs (from her heathly forest project/ fuel break areas) to a easy location for her to buck and transport. We also worked on making slash piles with the unusable wood. Angie had already done a lot of forest thinning and fuels reduction work, but the slash piles and log relocation take a long time, and 30 Cairn participants made a huge impact! Angie estimated that we moved around 33 cords of usable wood in just over 2 hours. All the usable wood collected will be bucked, split, and sold in cord to the city of Jamestown, with all proceeds going to help youth who can't afford to attend Cal-Wood, attend. We were told that each cord sold brings three underprivlegded youth to Cal-Wood, so with our help, Cal-Wood will be able to bring up close to 100 youth who normally would not be able to afford to attend otherwise. After lunch, we split into small groups and did a varetiy of volunteer activites, including:
Removing and replacing old benches in the main outdoor meeting space at Cal-Wood's lodge.
Placing water bars on the outside of the outdoor meeting space to help with water diversion.
Spreading new gravel doing in the outdoor meeting space
Staining picnic tables
Fire mitigation (srub removal) around tent and teepee sites
Painting the floor of a newly renovated warming hut.
After the hard work was done, we went back to, ate tacos, made s'mores and talked around the campfire. Sunday morning we did a Silent Sunrise Hike to Solitude Peak, where participants reflected on their reasons for joining Cairn, and enjoyed some sunrise mountain yoga. After returning to camp and enjoying a hot breakfast, we spent the rest of the day doing small and large group development activites.
Successes and Challenges: Successes -- working with Cal-Wood was awesome. Angie took care of setting up the work and campground, and provided a lot of stewardship education throughout the Saturday work day. The work was great because it was tangible and visible and Angie was wonderful with making sure we knew the true impact that each one of the projects would have.
Challenges -- having the overnight as the first project is tricky, because there wasn't much time on the first day to do icebreakers and to learn names.
