Description: About the Stewardship Site
The Sangre De Cristo's are one of Colorado's most iconic mountain ranges, and offer a true wilderness experience to their visitors. This project will focus on several trails on the northwest side of the range, which start at the floor of the San Luis Valley and climb into lush aspen groves and high alpine meadows. Trails in the Sangres are famous for their steep nature and can climb as much as 1,000 vertical feet over the distance of just one mile. Volunteers are encouraged to hike at their own pace; the first and last day of the project are reserved solely for the hike in and out and camp set-up and breakdown.
About the Volunteer Experience
This intimate trip of no more than 15 volunteers is a great opportunity for camping lovers who want to give back to the outdoor spaces they use. The Saguache Ranger District of the Rio Grande National Forest will provide some pack support; however, volunteers may need to backpack up to 5 miles with all of their personal camping gear, tools and a share of the food to reach the site. All meals will be provided by VOC. The work day may require daily hikes from the backcountry campsite to various worksites that range from mile to 4 miles round-trip. Volunteer work will include general maintenance such as clearing downed trees, installing drainage structures, cleaning old drainage structures and rebuilding damaged trail. This project is best suited for volunteers interested in learning and practicing a wide variety of skills and who enjoy the rigors of working in the wilderness.
Note: Due to the remote backcountry nature of this project, volunteers are required to register for all five days of the project. Volunteers not registered for the entirety of the project will be removed from the registration list.
About the Overall Impact
The work that volunteers contribute to the trails in the Sangre De Cristo Wilderness will mitigate the negative environmental impact that trails can have and ensure that future generations are able to experience the beauty and majesty of one of the state's incredible wilderness areas.
