Project Summary: On Tuesday, June 13th, the 4th-6th graders from Escuela de Guadalupe in Denver walked over to Barnum Park to help with a trash clean-up day. Denver Parks and Rec supplied trash grabbers and bags. The kids were pretty excited about the clean-up, and had a lot of energy throughout the morning. There was a lot of garbage throughout the park, as there is a homeless contingency that set up camps in the park. At noon, the group walked back to Escuela de Guadalupe for lunch. After lunch, VOC staff talked about sustainability, and where our trash goes when we put it out on the curb. We did a little activity to see if the kids could guess how long it took for different materials to decompose, and there were prizes.
Successes and Challenges: The school had no means of transportation, and could only go to Barnum Park, since that is walking distance from the school. Since there was no planting to be done at the park, trash pick-up was really the only option. We generally try to steer clear of trash clean-up projects, but the kids and teachers really enjoyed the day, and felt like they made a big impact. The afternoon sustainability lesson helped to tie it all together.
Lessons Learned: Trash pick-up is a good project if there is a park that can really use it, and a situation that doesn't lend itself to any other project.
Special Notes:
Stewardship Education: Provided by VOC staff. Whole afternoon was dedicated to learning about waste - how much we generate, what happens to waste, and what some solutions are.
