Summary: This half-day, youth-friendly project removes destructive oxeye daisies from the scenic James Peak Wilderness. **RESCHEDULED FROM 7/29 DUE TO WEATHER**
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
Valued for its remote feel and breathtaking beauty, James Peak Wilderness encompasses 14,000 acres to the south and west of the town of Nederland, not far from the tiny community of Rollinsville. It is home to high alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and most notoriously James Peak, the area's 13,294-foot namesake.
About the Volunteer Experience:
On this half-day project perfect for families and youth ages 8 and up, volunteers will arrive in the morning and enjoy coffee and breakfast before heading out to work. The moderate size of no more than 55 people will allow volunteers to get to know each other while working. Throughout the morning, volunteers will continue a statewide effort by pulling out and digging up oxeye daisy at the trailhead and nearby areas. Gloves, hand tools, and a light lunch will be provided.
About the Overall Impact:
For the past ten years, VOC volunteers have removed hundreds of thousands of oxeye daisy flowers and seeds at the East Portal access point to the James Peak Wilderness. These efforts have kept this aggressive and highly destructive (although pretty) weed from advancing into the Wilderness Area. Diverse ecosystems in the area are now healthier, and a variety of native plants are making a comeback. Pulling up and digging out the oxeye daisy plant before it flowers and produces seeds will prevent it from advancing into areas of James Peak Wilderness, helping maintain this incredible natural landscape.

Successes and Challenges: This project was resheduled due to rain out on the first attempt. We still had a decent turn out, but not nearly what we hoped for. The weather was simply too poor on the original date to go forward with the project, and we didn't get as many volunteers on the reschedule date.
