Summary: Restore one of Boulder's most popular trails in a pristine setting.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
TheMesa Trailruns 6.7 miles along Boulder's famous Flatirons and foothills, connecting Chautauqua Park on the north end to Eldorado Canyon Road on the south. This popular trail offers diverse terrain, beautiful scenery, multiple trail connections, 4-season utility access and abundant wildlife.
About the Volunteer Experience:
On this moderately-sized project of up to 60 people, volunteers will install stone "paving" directly into the trail to bring it out of the mud and create a hardened walking surface. The natural spring nearby often creates muddy conditions in this section, which leads to the trail widening significantly and hikers going off-trail. Volunteers will strategically place these stones to maintain the integrity of the spring while establishing and maintaining a sustainable trail route, creating a pleasant walking area that will encourage everyone to stay on the trail. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and the project will require a roughly one-mile hike from the parking area.
About the Overall Impact:
The project will restore the trail from erosion damage and improve its sustainability while providing an improved experience for visitors. Once completed, the stone pavers will create a user-friendly path that will keep people on the designated trail and off of the nearby vegetation. This will, in turn, enhance the surrounding habitat and reduce disturbances to the local flora and fauna.
