Project Summary: On Saturday, January 20th the Cairn students met at the VOC office for "Stewardship on the Homefront". The day was centered around taking care of our urban green spaces as well as learning what ways, big and small, we can make more sustainable choices.
We discussed how critical urban green spaces are in providing easy to reach, healthy habitats for people, local and migrating wildlife (especially birds) and plants. How these spaces provide not only environmental benefits but human health benefits too. The trees and vegetation in urban parks offer lower cost, natural solutions to storm water management and air pollution reduction. While access to vegetated areas has been linked to better perceived general health, reduced stress levels, reduced depression and more. Studies have shown that improving access to nearby, open spaces, has the potential to increase levels of physical activity.
The project consisted of partnering Wash Parks DPR staff to mulch around the parks many deciduous trees. Mulching is particular is important because: Mulch insulates the soil, helping to provide a buffer from hot and cold temperatures. Mulch also retains water, which helps keep the roots moist, and keeps weeks out to help prevent water competition. We also had a number of students clearing cattails from City Ditch. This removal is important because the cattail can cause the water to become caught and stagnant. The day was broken up with a pizza lunch and a presentation on Sustainablity in Everyday Life, by one of the mentors, Garrett Boucier, who has a Masters in Sustainability.
