Description

Start Date-End Date: 10/06/2018-10/07/2018 Land Manager Office: BLM - Royal Gorge Field Office Land Manager Contact: Mike Smith Funding Partner: Salida Mountain Trails Programmatic Partner: Salida, Town of, Salida Mountain Trails Summary: Registration will open August 1. Description: About the Stewardship Site: The Arkansas Hills Trail System can be accessed directly from downtown Salida and is currently rated as one of the Bureau of Land Management's "Backyard to Backcountry" treasures. From a confusing network of user created, unsustainable, and sometimes illegal trails in the Arkansas Hills area south of town, Salida Mountain Trails has partnered with the city & the BLM to build & rehabilitate a stacked system of environmentally sensitive trails that are accessible from downtown Salida. This area is on the warm side of the valley so many of the trails stay relatively dry and snow-free during the winter months. About the Volunteer Experience: The new trail project will consist of roughly 1 mile of steep terrain with a variety of switchbacks and retention structures. Volunteers will enjoy the challenge of constructing sustainable trail tread along a steep gradient that offers stunning views of the valley and the town of Salida below. About the Overall Impact: As an integral part of a BLM approval to construct more trails in the Arkansas Hills area, residents of the town of Salida overwhelmingly voiced the need for a hiker only trail option. Salida Mountain Trails answered the call! Adding a hiker only trail to an extremely popular mountain biking trail system will not only create an enhanced user experience for the hikers, it will also reduce traffic on certain sections of the trail system that are geared towards mountain bikers?additionally improving the mountain bike experience. The hiker only trail will also go a long way in reducing further degradation and erosion on the steep hillside by constructing retention features and constructing the new trail in a sustainable fashion.
