Summary: Registration will open August 1. Enjoy working lakeside in this volunteer project for ages 8+.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
A short drive northeast of Denver, the City of Brighton's Ken Mitchell Lakes will soon be the city's largest natural open space. The former gravel pits have been converted into a reservoir park and open space, offering fishing opportunities as well as hiking and biking trails.
About the Volunteer Experience:
Volunteers ages 8+ will spend the day working lakeside in Brighton's Ken Mitchell Open Space to plant willow "stakes" along the edges of the lakes and the South Platte River. With breakfast and lunch provided, this is a great opportunity to give back with the whole family and explore a relatively new open space in the Denver Metro area!
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to explore volunteer crew leadership as a Crew Leader for a Day, in which you can sign up to lead small groups of volunteers through the various tasks and ensure that everyone has a safe, rewarding, and fun experience! Contact your Project Manager, Kelly Kaufmann, at 303-715-1010 ext. 118 to learn more.
About the Overall Impact:
By planting native willow stakes along the Ken Mitchell Lakes and South Platte River, volunteers will help stabilize these areas for future sustainability and provide critical habitat and food for the local wildlife. In addition, volunteers' work will help beautify the newly-developed open space to transform this former gravel mining site to the City of Brighton's largest natural open space, providing countless recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
