Summary: Celebrate Get Outdoors Day with this Front Range project for volunteers ages 12+.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
Just off I-70 near the border of Clear Creek and Jefferson Counties, countless commuters speed by Floyd Hill every day without stopping to visit. Thanks to Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT) and the Open Space programs of both counties, a significant portion of Floyd Hill will now be open to the public and eventually offer a number of hiking and mountain biking trails that connect to both Clear Creek Canyon and the Peaks to Plains Trail.
About the Volunteer Experience:
Join us on National Get Outdoors Day as we embark on the first of three volunteer projects we have at Floyd Hill this year, part of a new two-year partnership! This is a great opportunity for volunteers ages 12+ to meet people from across the Front Range, discover a new recreation area, and play an important role in developing a new trail system near Denver. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, so grab a group, get outside, and give back!
Save the date for Trail Construction @ Floyd Hill w/ Colorado Native on August 25!
About the Overall Impact:
By breaking ground on a new trail in Floyd Hill Open Space, volunteers will contribute to the development of an expansive trail system that will ultimately provide miles of hiking and mountain biking opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Volunteers will also help lessen the impact on other, more popular trails by opening access to this new recreation area.
Need-to-Know Details:
Minors:All youth under 16mustbe accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on single-day projects.
Parking, Food & Facilities: Volunteers can take either a shuttle or a short, moderate hike to get from the parking area to the work site. Port-o-lets will be available throughout the work area, and our volunteer Crew Chefs will provide a light breakfast and lunch.
Cancellation:Our land manager partners rely on VOC volunteers to accomplish critical stewardship needs, and our projects often have wait lists. If you need to cancel, pleasecontact Jamie Burkeat 303-715-1010 ext. 116 as soon as possible so we can free your spot for another volunteer and have a full workforce.

Project Summary: 72 volunteers contributed 643.5 hours of work on the first trail of many to be constructed at the new Floyd Hill Open Space. Representatives from Mountain Area Land Trust, Clear Creek County and Colorado Lottery all came out and spoke to the volunteers about their involvement in the project. All of the 8 crews were doing the same work and were given 250 feet of trail to construct. Even with the hot, hot heat, the volunteers busted out 2300 linear feet of full finished trail and scratched in the remaining 400 feet. Our goal for the day was 2000 feet. Many of the volunteers were new to VOC but, there were about 6 people there that were on wither their 3rd, 5th, or 10th project. It was fun to to be able to recognize them.
Volunteers were in high spirits and remained motivated all day. James, with Clear Creek County, was very pleased with the work completed.
Successes and Challenges: Successes: Exceeding expectations on the first of 6 projects out at Floyd Hill over the next 6 years. James with Clear Creek County was there all day and used his pickup truck to shuttle up tools and lunch which made everyone's lives better. End of day snacks were also a hit.
Challenges: The heat. As I was walking through the project site, crew leaders and myself were making sure that volunteers had enough water and were taking breaks as necessary.
Lessons Learned: McLeods come at a premium on trail construction project. I was happy that David Marlow suggested bringing more than what was on the tool list.
Special Notes: Section 1 will be finished by James, with Clear Creek County and his crew.
For the reminder of the projects, we will be able to have volunteers park right at the trail head instead of being shuttled by the county. If done correctly, you can fit 100 cars in the area to the left of the private drive (looking up road).
Stewardship Education: Dylan with Mountain Area Land Trust came out and addressed the volunteers in the morning about MALT's involvement in acquisition of the property and their partnership with Clear Creek County.
James with Clear Creek County talked to the group about the plan for the open space and the partnership with VOC and other volunteer groups.
Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: Does VOC have guidelines for working in extreme heat? Taylor and I were talking about this. If it is above xx degrees, do we evaluate the length of the day or let volunteers decide when they are done and leave early.
Description of Accidents/Incidents: There was one woman who got freaked out about the heights and steep slopes. She hiked down soon after arriving at the project site.
No incidents/accidents to report.
Description of Work Completed: 2300 feet of fully finished trail was constructed with backslope and appropriate drainage. 7 climbing turns were constructed.
