Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/06/2018-07/06/2018 Land Manager Office: USFS - Clear Creek Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Ralph Bradt Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Restore the popular Warren Gulch Trail under the guidance of Steve West, one of our most-skilled volunteers. Description: About the Stewardship Site: Nestled in Arapaho National Forest and Pike National Forest just 30 miles west of Denver, the Mt. Evans Wilderness spans more than 74,000 acres and is home to bighorn sheep, two of Colorado's famous "14ers", and the highest paved road in North America. The Warren Gulch Trail in the Mt. Evans Wilderness offers residents of the Denver Metro area and neighboring communities with superb highcountry hiking and mountain biking opportunities. About the Volunteer Experience: You will be led by one of our most-skilled volunteers, Steve West, in a small group of 15 or fewer volunteers as you perform critical trail maintenance tasks including repairing the trail tread and building drainage and erosion control structures. This is a great project for those who enjoy intimate, backcountry experiences and/or are looking to improve their technical stewardship skills. We'll also be back in the Mt. Evans Wilderness on July 14 to work on the Chicago Lakes Trail. About the Overall Impact: With its close proximity to Denver, trails in and around the Mt. Evans Wilderness experience a high amount of use in warmer months. On the Warren Gulch Trail, mountain bike use in particular has soared in recent years, increasing the potential for trail damage. Volunteers will help ensure the Warren Gulch Trail can sustain heavy traffic while offering a safe and pleasant hiking and biking experience for years to come. Need-to-Know Details: Parking, Food & Facilities:VOC will provide all tools and equipment, including work gloves and hard hats when needed. Parking is available at the trailhead but will require a 1-2 mile moderate hike to the worksite. There are no restroom facilities and VOC will not provide any food on this project. Cancellation:Our land manager partners rely on VOC volunteers to accomplish critical stewardship needs, and our projects often have wait lists. If you need to cancel, pleasecontact Jamie Burkeat 303-715-1010 ext. 116 as soon as possible so we can free your spot for another volunteer and have a full workforce.
