We took 9 students (students ranged from 3rd-5th graders) from the Eco Club to the Urban Farm in Stapleton Colorado where the students got a tour of the farm and a chance to learn all about the various animals and programs that the farm runs. After the tour the students helps muck-out about 500 sq feet of hay/animal feces /water from sheep and goat pens. The students really enjoyed being able to interact with the animals while in the pens, many having never been this close to these types of animals. A lot were surprised to see all these animals living in such a urban location. The day wrapped up with a reflection activity in the Farm's community garden lead by Amanda from the Kiva Center. Successes and Challenges: Successes: The work was made fun by the fact that the animals were present and the "why" of the task made sense to the students. They knew by cleaning the pens they were improving the lives of the animals they were getting to know. The tour was a nice touch Challenges: The group was not timely, so we were late arriving to the project. We were also late departing, because their chaperone kept allowing them to stop and take photos. - I did not mind this since I don't run the club but it caused us to be late back to the school. More time at site would have been nice. It is a decent drive from Castro.
