Summary: Develop a new Front Range trail system; for women and girls ages 12+.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
Just off I-70 near the border of Clear Creek and Jefferson Counties, countless commuters speed by Floyd Hill every day without stopping to visit. Thanks to Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT) and the Open Space programs of both counties, a significant portion of Floyd Hill will now be open to the public and eventually offer a number of hiking and mountain biking trails that connect to both Clear Creek Canyon and the Peaks to Plains Trail.
About the Volunteer Experience:
Join us for this exciting volunteer opportunity created for women, by women! Exclusively reserved for women and girls ages 12+, volunteers will be led through a variety of trail construction tasks by our fantastic women Crew Leaders and work side-by-side with women from across the state! This is a great opportunity to meet other outdoor-loving women, discover a new recreation area, and play an important role in developing a new trail system near Denver. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, so grab the girls, get outside and give back!
About the Overall Impact:
By breaking ground on a new trail in Floyd Hill Open Space, volunteers will contribute to the development of an expansive trail system that will ultimately provide miles of hiking and mountain biking opportunities for residents and visitors alike, as well as lessen the impact on other, more popular trails in the area. As a women-only project, volunteers will also help contribute to creating a supportive community of women in the outdoors!

Project Summary: 88 female volunteers and 6 female VOC staff attended this first ever Women's Only Trail Construction Project at Floyd Hill Open Space. The event was kicked-off by Ann Baker Easley who shared a powerful personal story about how the outdoors has helped shape much of her life. Then Martha Tableman from Clear Creek County Open Space spoke a bit about her professional role, as well as how the work the volunteers were about to do were going to positively impact the space. Cori Mayer, an intern from Mountain Area Land Trust (MALT) spoke about her experiences going from a male donimated college degree to a largely female run- outdoor based run organization and the empowerment she has felt working with and for powerful strong women.
8 crews of between 9-11 women then set out to construct trail.
Lunch was held back at the trail head, where the program continued with three more female speakers. Including VOC's Jamie Burke who shared how sports and the outdoors aided her in feeling comfortable and confident in her physical and emotional power. She also spoke of the importance of being the role model for other generations of females. Next to speak was Ella Douglas, a recent graduate of the Cairn Program and first person to be awarded the Grossman Scholarship. She shared a personal experience that for awhile tainted her perception of the outdoors and the safety she felt as a women recreating, but how eventually it was through her deep rooted love of nature that she found her power again. Lastly, Laraine Martin from SheJumps shared a little bit about the organization and how having activities where women can participate in all female group can positively shape their experience, confidence and self-esteem. Lunch came to a close with a raffle.
After lunch, the women headed back onto the trail to do some final hours of work. In total they successfully completed 1,100 of trail and made a significant dent on 700 more feet that will only need some additional maintenance to be ready to go.
The day culminated with a happy hour and final raffle. Volunteers were also encouraged to write a commitment or call to action to themselves that VOC will mail to them in 6 months.
