Project Summary: 14 students from Stanley British Primary School cleared out the ram's pen at the Urban Farm, working a total of nearly 40 hours all together. Although these students were about 30 minutes delayed, due to the teacher getting lost, the students were hard working and very interested in the service day and the Urban Farm's work. Students were asking questions about each of the farm animals and engaged when Rachel from the Urban Farm was teaching the students about each animal.
The Urban Farm was a great partner, although I think there was lots of room to improve with the programming that could have gone along with this project if we had time. It was difficult that Rachel was split between the 2 groups because I felt like I couldn't answer certain questions from the students or help to delegate tasks to do around the farm. I think if we were to do this project again, it would be nice to discuss with the Urban Farm staff how the day would be run and specific tasks that we needed to accomplish. This was also difficult because the farm isn't sure what they will need help on until a day or 2 before the actual project, so I think being flexible and making sure we support farm staff is key here.
Successes and Challenges: Successes:
-students enjoyed learning about the farm and seemed engaged in the work they were doing
-students asked questions and were hard workers
Challenges:
-bus arrived late, making the students not get as much work done as the farm staff would have liked
-some students messed around with the animals, leading to some rams ramming 2 kids (no harm done)
-felt like we needed more time to have a cohesive lesson on the importance of urban farms and to really accomplish work here
