Project Summary:
The first part of our day was spent at the GrowHaus. The Growhaus is a nonprofit indoor farm, marketplace and educational center in Denver's Elyria-Swansea neighborhood.Their vision isa world where all communities have the means to nourish themselves, with a mission tocreate a community-driven, neighborhood-based food system by serving as a hub for food distribution, production, education, and economic opportunity. They do this through:
Production: The GrowHaus produces fresh produce year-round. Their three growing operations demonstrate a variety of innovative,community-oriented urban farming techniques.
Food Distribution: In addition to farms, a healthy food system needs infrastructure for food processing and distribution. The GrowHaus works with community members to provide fresh and healthy food at a price resident can afford.
Food Education: The GrowHaus offers education for people of all ages and backgrounds around nutrition, gardening, cooking, and other essential skills for building healthy communities.
In preparation for the tour and the workshop students were asked to answer a few questions about healthy food and their own knowledge of it. Such as, how easy is it to eat healthy food? After that the group was given a tour of the GrowHaus before being split into two small groups stations. After the rotation stations, students participated in a few short and small stewardship projects, then came back for a whole group debrief.
After the GrowHaus we went back to the VOC office and had a casual small group DEI discussion while eating lunch (GrowHaus ran over on time). Then they split up into their final project groups to make sure their tasks were defined, before coming back as a big group and giving everyone an overview about what each group was planning on doing.
Successes and Challenges: I would have liked more of a valuable service opportunity that took more time and seemed more meaningful.
I think that the DEI activity would have been better as a whole group if we had had access to the conference room.
