Summary: Peace and quiet await you on this weekend project in the San Luis Valley.
Description: Where You'll Be:
Nestled in Colorado's scenic San Luis Valley at the base of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Cotton Creek Trail offers remarkable views as it winds through the Rio Grande National Forest to the boundary of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area. Being in a more rural, remote part of the state, volunteers can enjoy starry night skies and true peace and quiet on this project. For those looking to round out the weekend, the area is near the unique town of Crestone, several hot springs, and a bat cave with incredible bat flights in summer evenings.
What You'll Do:
Spend the weekend among stunning views and starry skies as you work to restore and reroute the Cotton Creek Trail at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This peaceful part of the state is worth the trip and you'll get to enjoy the full experience as you camp with a few dozen volunteers aged 14+ near the trailhead and enjoy meals cooked on-site by our volunteer Crew Chefs.
Click here to learn more about the importance of trail maintenance.
Why It Matters:
With limited resources for maintenance, the multi-use Cotton Creek Trail has become extremely eroded over the years. Without help from VOC, it would be years before this trail was properly cared for. Your efforts over the weekend will be a significant help to the U.S. Forest Service in making the Cotton Creek Trail safer and more sustainable for the hikers, equestrians, and hunters that frequent it each year.
