Summary: Harvest a vegetable garden with Grow Local Colorado! For volunteers ages 8+.
Description: About the Stewardship Site:
Observatory Park is a small, yet spacious park near the University of Denver (DU) campus. Home to DU's historic Chamberlin Observatory, the park also boasts century-old trees, an extensive playground area, and vast open fields perfect for picnicking or a pickup game of Frisbee.
About the Volunteer Experience:
Looking for an easy way to get outside and give back to your community? Look no further! Through our long-standing partnership with Grow Local Colorado, volunteers ages 8+ will spend the evening harvesting the veggie garden in Denver's Observatory Park. Grow Local maintained the gardens throughout the summer and VOC is returning to help harvest the vegetables, which will be donated to local residents in need.
About the Overall Impact:
The vegetables that volunteers harvest will be donated to local food banks, homeless shelters, and families in need. This partnership with Grow Local Colorado creates a more connected community; demonstrates the beauty and efficacy of edible gardens; inspires residents to plant their own vegetable gardens; and contributes to a more sustainable food chain by reducing our carbon footprint.
Please Note: These evening gardening projects are very popular and have limited space. We ask that you please give others the chance to participate by signing up for just one gardening project this fall. Thank you!

Project Summary: 10 volunteers came out on September 26 to harvest Grow Local's garden plot @ Observatory Park. The volunteers made quick work of the 250 square foot garden, removing all the plants for compost, and harvesting close to 30 pounds of veggies that went to Denver Food Rescue. After harvesting all the veggies, which included kale, chard, carrots, cabbage, beans, and turnips, volunteers worked on breaking down any remaining plant matter into compost bags then raking over the plot. The final step to putting the garden to bed was to plant winter rye and other cover crops that will help amend the soil over the winter months. At the end of the project, volunteers were treated to yerba mattes and chipotle gift cards as a thank you for their hard work.
