Start Date-End Date: 09/24/2019-09/24/2019 Land Manager Office: Grow Local Colorado Land Manager Contact: Barbara Masoner Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Harvest vegetable gardens with Grow Local Colorado! For volunteers ages 8+. Description: About the Stewardship Site: The Colorado Governor's Mansion, located in the heart of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, is a member of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Originally built as a private residence in 1908, it was given to the State of Colorado as an executive residence in 1959. In 2011, Governor Hickenlooper donated the plants that were to become the First Family's Giving Garden, planted by Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) in conjunction with Grow Local Colorado. About the Volunteer Experience: Looking for an easy way to get outside and give back to your community? Look no further! Through our long-standing partnership with Grow Local Colorado, volunteers ages 8+ will spend the evening harvesting the veggie garden at the Governor's Mansion. Grow Local maintained the gardens throughout the summer and VOC is returning to help harvest the vegetables, which will be donated to local residents in need. About the Overall Impact: The vegetables that volunteers harvest will be donated to local food banks, homeless shelters, and families in need. This partnership with Grow Local Colorado creates a more connected community; demonstrates the beauty and efficacy of edibles gardens; inspires residents to plant their own vegetable gardens; and contributes to a more sustainable food chain by reducing our carbon footprint. Please Note: These evening gardening projects are very popular and have limited space. We ask that you please give others the chance to participate by signing up for just one gardening project this fall. Thank you! Need-to-Know Details: Minors:All youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on single-day projects. The rabbits this year were a big challenge for this garden, causing a much smaller yield than hoped for, and less work for our volunteers. After harvesting all the veggies, which included kale, chard, tomatoes, okra, and basil, volunteers worked on breaking down any remaining plant matter into compost bags then raking over the plot. At the end of the project, volunteers were treated to chipotle gift cards as a thank you for their hard work. Successes and Challenges: We decreased the number of people for this project and 7-8 people max is a good number, especially with the smaller crop yield. We still ended in about 1.5 hours but volunteers felt like they had more to do.
