Summary: Help build a trail or install picnic pads on this project for volunteers 12+.
Description: Project photo by Julie Majors.
Where You'll Be:
In 2013, Staunton State Park became the newest place to earn Colorado State Park designation. Frances Hornbrook Staunton donated the first 1,720-acre parcel of land in 1986, and subsequent acquisitions allowed Colorado Parks & Wildlife to create the park that exists today just 40 miles southeast of Denver. With an area of 3,828 acres, Staunton boasts geologic features including soaring granite cliffs, unique soil composition and impressive water features, setting the backdrop for a range of recreational opportunities.
What You'll Do:
On this project for volunteers ages 12+, you'll spend the day either building a small trail connection or establishing picnic areas near the main Meadow Parking Lot (or perhaps doing both!). An unsustainable, user-created "social trail" has already developed between the Staunton Ranch Trail and the Dines Meadow Trail so you'll help replace it with a properly built, sustainable connector trail. In addition, volunteers will help create 11 picnic table pads to keep traffic in designated areas and improve accessibility of visitors with wheelchairs. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, making this an easy way to give back with the family.
Why It Matters:
Staunton State Park sees an estimated 150,000 visitors each year and all those feet add up! By creating the new trail connection and establishing a designated place for picnic tables, you will help prevent the destruction of park vegetation and provide visitors who use wheelchairs with a level surface at the picnic tables to allow them to enjoy their Staunton State Park experience even more.
