Project Summary: 64 students attended this field trip, with 8 adults (3 teachers, 1 aid, and 3 parents). We spent approximately 40 minutes removing mullein, and the students each removed at least one, having a blast all the while. The total number of volunteer hours was calculated to be 4.25 hours times the 72 volunteers, totaling 306 hours. Due to some complications (see below), our modified schedule ran as follows:
10:45-11:00 Intro and division into groups
11:00-11:40 Rotation 1 (large group boulder bus, small group CO Mammals)
11:40-12:10 Lunch
12:10-12:50 Rotation 2 (large group CO Mammals, small group boulder bus)
12:50-1:20 Mullein Removal
1:20-1:30 Wrap up and thank you!
When surveyed by a show of hands:
5 students had been to Cherry Creek State Park before.
8 had gone bouldering or rock climbing before.
20 had done a volunteer project in their community before.
At the end of the day 100% of the students said they would come back to the park.
90% raised their hands when asked if they had learned or tried something new.
Multiple students said after the stewardship project that they wanted to bring their parents back in the summer to remove more mullein.
Successes and Challenges: While the overall project was a success, there were some challenges:
- The buses arrived at approximately 10:30 to the wrong location, and Delaney needed to drive over to direct them to the site. This led to a 10:45 start time, an hour after originally planned
- One teacher forgot his permission slips, but was able to scan them and send them to Taylor, who forward them to Kathy
- The skins and skulls portion of the programming was pretty short and left many kids scattered and lacking focus. This could have been more in depth and had more of an impact
