Project Summary: Overall, success! While this project needed to be rescheduled due to the shooter threat at in Jeff Co, we were able to still hold the event on May 13th at Garfield Lake Park within walking distance from Castro. The kids cleaned up 400 gallons of trash and 800 gallons of pine needles with DPR and had a great time with Colorado Mountain Club learning about CO mammals and hanging out on the Bouldering Bus. Following the project, CMC and I (Delaney) chatted about how to engage the students more and decided that maybe shorter stations and potentially more teacher/chaperone involvement is needed. This is definitely something to consider if we continue to work with CMC and Castro for future PLC programming.
The schedule ran as follows:
9:45-10:00 Students walk to Garfield Lake
10:00-10:15 Intro and split into groups
10:15-11:10 First Station
11:10-11:40 Lunch
11:40-12:35 Second Station
12:35-1:30 Third Station
1:30-1:40 Debrief
1:30 Students walk back to Castro
Successes and Challenges:
Lessons Learned: 4th graders can't be in one station for 55 minutes - it's simply too long! We at least need to make sure we have backup ways to engage them if they lose focus
Having a project at Garfield was awesome, given the proximity to the school, but I think the students were too comfortable to focus and stay captivated
By the end of the day, there was a group of students that was very checked out and was just hanging at the playground with little teacher supervision. This stressed myself and CMC out and it felt like the day got a little out of control and scattered.
Being so close to the lake, the students really wanted to play in the water, which was a problem/distraction when trying to pick up trash and maintain focus.
