Project Summary: While this project was small and had to run a bit long, it was a success! We had no idea how many people would show up before the project, and had a fair amount of work to accomplish. 17 people showed up from 9 to 12 and a few volunteers stayed until 2 to finish the work and load up tools. Derek from NWF led the gardening portion of the day and Amanda from the Kiva Center led activities for the kids who attended the project, including planting cilantro seeds, painting clay pots, and playing outdoor games. Mujeres Emprendedores catered lunch and Dr. V from Castro gave the leftover food to a nearby family who lives down the street.
Successes and Challenges: - Amp the Cause also had a work day on this same day. It would have been great to combine our efforts, instead of work separately on two different projects
- We had a lot more work than we had volunteers. It would have been great to have more community buy-in, especially if we were able to get more families out from the school
- We had a lot of extra food. Maybe in the future, we hold off on catering and just order sandwiches for the volunteers once we know how many people want lunch
- NWF and the Kiva Center were great partners! The school was not very responsive, but Dr. V was super engaged in person
Lessons Learned: - The community cares and those who came had a great time, but we need to find more ways to tap into those who want to volunteer and do more volunteer projects
- I think it would be good to reach out to some of the following for a future family project: Re:Vision, Josefina Rivera (an awesome community volunteer), and teachers from the school. This way, we could have more actual groups committed to attending and advertising for the event
