Project Summary: For our February project, the Cairn program went to the Urban Farm in Stapleton for the morning. After a brief talk on local agriculture and the history of the farm we went on a tour of the farm. We then broke into a few groups for various projects that needed to be done around the farm. There was a group that did fence repair, one that mucked pens, and the other that sanitizedall the pots and growing trays that would be used to start their seedlings in the coming weeks. Students worked really hard all morning to at their various tasks and then were rewarded at the end of by getting to go in a pen and play with baby goats.
We then went back to the VOC to put in more time planning for the final project.
Successes and Challenges: A shorter day than normal, because the Urban Farm only hosts 2-2.5 hour volunteer opportunities on the weekend, but I know the students were still happy to get outside and get their hands dirty.
Finding January/February projects that suit the level of activity these students like is always challenging with weather being a limiting factor of what outdoor work is available outside of mulching trees at a city park.
