Description

Start Date-End Date: 07/18/2020-07/19/2020 Land Manager Office: USFS - Rio Grande National Forest Land Manager Contact: Jason Remshardt Funding Partner: Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project Programmatic Partner: Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project Summary: Registration is currently on hold. Hike along creeks and record information about the presence or absence of beavers to help inform riparian management. Description: Due to COVID-19, we expect significant changes to our 2020 volunteer projects including possible changes to dates, type of work, and project sizes. We are diligently working with our land management partners to address the logistical challenges posted by COVID-19 and provide safe volunteer opportunities. Please stay tuned and visitwww.voc.org/covid19for the most up-to-date information on VOC's response. Where You'll Be: Originally home to Ute, Pueblo, and Jicarilla Apache tribes, the Rio Grande National Forest stretches 1.83 million acres across southcentral Colorado. It features a variety of landscapes from high desert to rocky crags, as well as an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers. Volunteers will be working in the eastern edge of the forest near the small town of South Fork in the San Luis Valley. What You'll Do: Get your beaver binoculars on! On this "citizen science" project, volunteers ages 14+ will help collect data on where beavers are, or are not, present in three key areas. Throughout the day, we'll walk and/or drive along three different creeks to capture data using a free smartphone app; the work ranges from easy to difficult depending on the terrain of the trail. With campsites and meals provided, this is a great opportunity to explore a natural gem and learn more about the importance of beavers. Why It Matters: Beavers are a "keystone species", which means they have a huge impact on their environment and other species. When beavers are present in a watershed, their creation of dams and other engineering of waterways play a critical role in the health of the watershed. The data volunteers collect will help the U.S. Forest Service plan where to potentially reintroduce beavers for the health of the ecosystem at large.
