Description: Due to COVID-19, we expect significant changes to our 2020 volunteer projects including possible changes to dates, type of work, and project sizes. We are diligently working with our land management partners to address the logistical challenges posted by COVID-19 and provide safe volunteer opportunities. Please stay tuned and visitwww.voc.org/covid19for the most up-to-date information on VOC's response. Where You'll Be: Located at nearly 10,000 feet, Turquoise Lake is a mere 5 miles from the small and unique town of Leadville. The lake boasts beautiful mountain views and opportunities for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and relaxing on the beach. With campgrounds both by the water and tucked into the trees, this is a can't-miss destination for families to enjoy nature together. What You'll Do: Individuals and families alike are invited to spend the weekend with VOC and Cloud City Wheelers as we work to build a new, bike-optimized trail in the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area. While children ages 6-11 enjoy fun programming from a local youth outdoor education organization, volunteers ages 12+ will get to break ground on the new trail.Enjoy great meals, great views, and great company in the evenings at an expansive camping area in a meadow just a short ways away from the lake. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to meet Wilder! This part-yeti, part-mountain goat from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO)'s Generation Wild campaign is stewardship's newest spokecreature. He looks forward to thanking volunteers for their hard work and sharing his message, "You Are What You Leave Behind". Why It Matters: Lake County is more than 75% public land, which makes it a priority to support the area's economy through sustainable outdoor recreation. Years in the works, this project will be the first major trail construction on this Forest Service property in a decade. Volunteers' efforts will help bring new trails to this heavily trafficked recreation area, providing more entry-level biking trails for families and beginners to enjoy this fantastic natural area.
