Summary: Registration is currently on hold. Spend a weekend on the trail in the scenic Yampa Valley!
Description: Due to COVID-19, we expect significant changes to our 2020 volunteer projects including possible changes to dates, type of work, and project sizes. We are diligently working with our land management partners to address the logistical challenges posted by COVID-19 and provide safe volunteer opportunities. Please stay tuned and visitwww.voc.org/covid19for the most up-to-date information on VOC's response.
Where You'll Be:
For hundreds of years, the Yampa Valley served as summer hunting grounds for Ute tribes, and its natural springs were frequently visited by the Yampatika Ute and Arapho tribes as sacred places of physical and spiritual healing. Today, the Yampa Valley is still home to stunning views and peaceful springs, as well as Stagecoach State Park about 30 minutes south of Steamboat Springs. The parkboasts 1,641 acres, a 771-acre reservoir, and through-routes to more than 35,000 acres of the Routt National Forest and the Sarvis Creek Wilderness Area.
What You'll Do:
Individuals and families alike will enjoy this weekend in Stagecoach State Park as we work to finish a 1-mile section of trail that will be machine-cut prior to our arrival. Children ages 6-11 will enjoy fun programming from a local youth outdoor education organization Meanwhile, volunteers ages 12+ willdig and move dirt to ensure proper trail structure and drainage, re-seed the area, and spread, pack, and install materials to further stabilize the trail and mitigate erosion.
Meals will be provided along with campsites within walking distance to a camp store, swim beach, and volleyball courts, making this agreat way to get out and give back with the whole family!
Why It Matters:
The trail you help complete will extend the South Routt trail system and provide access to a sizable area of public lands, offering a variety of recreational opportunities forhikers, bikers, backpackers, equestrians, hunters, fishermen, and wildlife enthusiasts. This project is highly desired by both the local community as well as park visitors, and the results of your efforts will be greatly appreciated and enjoyed for years to come!
