Where You'll Be:
Valued for its remote feel and breathtaking beauty, the James Peak Wilderness encompasses 14,000 acres to the south and west of the town of Nederland, not far from the tiny community of Rollinsville. It is home to high alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and its namesake James Peak, which sits at 13,294 feet above sea level.
What You'll Do:
On this half-day project, volunteers ages 8+ will spend the morning digging up invasive oxeye daisies from the trailhead and surrounding areas. This is a moderately sized project with about 50 volunteers led byJim Jacobson, a volunteer who has attended nearly 200 VOC projects since 1991 and has been leading invasive plant removal projects in the Boulder Ranger District for years. Your participation is part of a multi-year effort (nearly 15 years!)to improve the ecosystem's health and this is a great opportunity for families and volunteers of all abilities to make an immediate difference in one of Colorado's treasured Wilderness Areas.
Why It Matters:
Although pretty, the oxeye daisy is an aggressive and highly destructive weed. VOC volunteers have worked for over a decade to remove hundreds of thousands of flowers and seeds from the East Portal access point to the James Peak Wilderness. By joining this important effort, volunteers will help promote the health of native plants and prevent the weed from advancing further into the Wilderness Area.
Need-to-Know Details:
Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on single day projects.
VOC will provide all equipmentincluding tools and work gloves.
