Summary: Float down the Gunnison River to build a technical trail on this Stewardship Adventure!
Description: Where You'll Be:
The Gunnison River is a 180-mile-long tributary of the Colorado River that winds through Southwest Colorado, including the Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Management Area near Grand Junction. On this project, you'll enjoy scenic high desert views with beautiful rock formations, cacti, canyons, and stunning sunsets.Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the area also offersmany opportunities forhiking, biking, motorized and equestrian use.
What You'll Do:
Volunteers ages 18+ will start this three-day project by canoeing 8 miles down the Gunnison River to get to the project site, where we will camp and spend the weekend constructing a new multi-use trail. Volunteers who enjoy a challenge can tackle technical rock sections, including constructing ramps and walls.Centennial Canoe Outfitters will guide the float portion of the trip, and VOC will provide all meals. While no experience is required, volunteers should be prepared to hike up to one hour over difficult terrain from the campsite to the project site each day.
After a half-day of work on Sunday, we'll pack up camp and float down the river to a pick-up point where you'll be shuttled back to your vehicle.
NOTE: There is a $230 fee per person, and all days are required for participation. Registrants' spots are not reserved until payment is made in full. Fees will only be refunded to those who cancel at least two weeks prior to the project (by 4 PM on Friday, April 24).
Why It Matters:
This area receives 13,000 trail users annually, with ever-increasing visitation. Users include hikers, mountain bikers, equestrian and motorcycle users, and volunteers' work on this new multi-use trail will help bring these communities together to collaborate and build better trails for their shared future. In addition, this trail will include some fun features designed for motorized users and will help attract tourists and residents alike to support the surrounding community.
