Where You'll Be: The iconic Flatirons are your backdrop for this volunteer day in the South Mesa Area east of Eldorado Canyon State Park. Originally home to Native Americans, primarily the Southern Arapaho tribe, this area later became a popular area for early homesteaders and contains remnants of this history, including old cabins and the Dunn House built in 1875. Today, the Towhee Trail intersects the Mesa Trail through Shadow Canyon and offers wide-open, sweeping views. What You'll Do: The Towhee Trail was rerouted in 2016, away from a riparian area that supports many bird species. This realignment greatly improved the birds' habitat and the sustainability of the trail, but a flatter section of the trail is still susceptible to drainage issues and muddy conditions. Volunteers will spend the day among sweeping mountain views as you work to improve the trail's drainage and resurface the trail with a gravel-like material called crusher fine. Why It Matters: By resurfacing the trail and improving drainage on the Towhee Trail, volunteers' efforts will go a long way to making the trail more durable and sustainable. By improving trail conditions - especially in wet shoulder seasons - you will help keep users on the trail and prevent damage to the surrounding natural area.
