Evans Outdoor Education Laboratory School. Description: Due to COVID-19, we expect significant changes to our 2020 volunteer projects including possible changes to dates, type of work, and project sizes. We are diligently working with our land management partners to address the logistical challenges posted by COVID-19 and provide safe volunteer opportunities. Evans Outdoor Education Laboratory School near Evergreen is situated on a historic property originally known as Dodge Ranch. It serves as one of two locations for Jefferson County's hands-on Outdoor Lab Schools, wheresixth-gradestudents live at the ranch for a week and study the area's history, ecology, wildlife, geology, and astronomy. The site boasts a main lodge and outbuildings, hiking trails, and spectacular views in the shadow of Mt. Evans. What You'll Do: This is the first oftwo Thursdayprojects at the Mt. Evans Outdoor Lab this year. Volunteers ages 16+ will be led by one of our most experienced volunteers, Terry Gimbel, as they work to construct a new, sustainable trail. This is a great opportunity for volunteers looking for a range of project challenges as tasks may include creating newtrail, closing old ones, and installing rock steps and rock walls as needed. Food will not be provided on this project, so please plan to bring lunch and a snack. Check out Weekday Trail Restoration @ Mt. Evans Outdoor Lab #2 on September 24. Why It Matters: By building the new trail, volunteers will create a sustainable route for thousands of Outdoor Lab students to safely hike around the school's gorgeous grounds and enjoy various educational attractions along the way. Need-to-Know Details: Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or olderon single-day projects. VOC will provide all equipmentincluding tools and work gloves.
