Start Date-End Date: 07/10/2020-07/10/2020 Land Manager Office: USFS - South Platte Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Brandon Mitchell Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Summary: Registration is currently on hold. Practice your technical trail skills with legendary Steve West on our second project this year on Shelf Lake Trail. Description: Photo courtesy of Jeanne Kerr (2019) Due to COVID-19, we expect significant changes to our 2020 volunteer projects including possible changes to dates, type of work, and project sizes. We are diligently working with our land management partners to address the logistical challenges posted by COVID-19 and provide safe volunteer opportunities. Please stay tuned and visitwww.voc.org/covid19for the most up-to-date information on VOC's response. Where You'll Be: Located off Guanella Pass Road about 20 miles from Bailey, the Shelf Lake Trail starts at 10,000 feet and climbs over the course of 3 miles through Pike National Forest to a beautiful alpine lake just under 12,000 feet. The trail boasts a spectacular display of wildflowers above treeline at this time of year and hikers able to make the elevation gain are rewarded with quiet forest, wide alpine meadows, and stunning views all around. What You'll Do: This is the second of two projects on the Shelf Lake Trail this year. On this Friday project, you'll be led by Steve West, one of our most-skilled volunteers who has participated on more than 275 VOC projects since 1991. Throughout the day, you'll work to improve a half-mile section of the popular Shelf Lake Trail. This project is relatively small with less than 20 volunteers. Tasks may be technical in nature as you install elevated turnpike, water bars, check steps, and other drainage structures. If you are new to trail work, don't worry! No previous experience is required; just be prepared to work hard at high altitude among classic Colorado views. Why It Matters: This project is part of a larger plan to improve visitor access and experience along the entire Geneva Creek corridor. The Shelf Lake Trail is located in one of the most popular dispersed camping areas in the South Platte Ranger District, leading to increased use and corresponding maintenance needs. Your efforts will help address these needs and ensure the Shelf Lake Trail can remain sustainable and accessible for years to come.Click here to learn more about the importance of trail maintenanceand join us on July 10th for the second project on the Shelf Lake Trail.
