Where You'll Be: Chatfield State Park is located southwest of Denver and is a popular destination for those hoping to make a quick getaway from the city. The park is open to nearly every type of recreationist including cyclists, hikers, horseback riders, stand-up paddle boarders, boaters, and fishermen. It is also home to an abundance of wildlife, including over 300 species of birds, which is why the Audubon Society of Greater Denver operates an Audubon Center at the park's historic Atchison Ranch. What You'll Do: Beat the heat on this morning project at Chatfield State Park! Working in the shade on the banks of the South Platte River, volunteers will help remove about 500 feet of smooth wire fencing and wooden posts. The fence was originally constructed to keep horses on the trail, but the park's Reallocation Project will soon add 12 feet of water to the reservoir, submerging the fence and trail. To prevent injury to park users and provide a better environment for fish and wildlife, you'll spend the morning cutting wire, removing staples, rolling wire, and hauling materials a short distance uphill to the road, where it will later be removed by park staff. Why it Matters: With the Reallocation Project, 12 feet of water will be added to the reservoir to support uses such as agriculture, municipal, environmental and recreation. The fence we are removing will be underwater, causing the posts to pop out and cause a hazard to park visitors as well as fish and wildlife.
