Where You'll Be: In 2013, Riverside Park was completely destroyed by the historic floods that flowed through Colorado. Five years later, Riverside Park was able to re-open, providing residents with plenty of open space along the South Platte River as well as softball fields, basketball, and picketball courts, a playground, and a 7-acre lake for fishing! But the work isn't over yet. VOC worked to seed this area to help restore the area to its former glory, and now we are returning to remove invasive weed species. What You'll Do: Spend a Thursday morning from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM helping restore Riverside Park! Our primary task is to remove hemlock throughout the park. Why It Matters: Riverside Park is a gem in the City of Evans, and was greatly missed while it was closed for restoration and repairs. By volunteering, you will play an important part in restoring this park to its former glory and providing ample recreation opportunities for residents to enjoy! Successes and Challenges: We manually tackled hemlock on close to 5 acres of land. The hemlock was not yet flowering, so depending on size, it was either chopped down or pulled out at the root and left on the ground. Lessons Learned: It was super hot so we ended a bit early. Wearing long pants and sleeves and working with hemlock in the heat made everyone lose their muster earlier than the expected noon finish time. Special Notes: Stewardship Education: Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: I was a bit nervous working with Poison Hemlock, but a good safety orientation and having hand washing available for volunteers before eating or drinking anything really helped!
