People who are unvaccinated are more at risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and death. If you choose to volunteer while unvaccinated, you must wear a mask for the duration of the project. Cancellation & Waitlists:Due to this year's limited number of projects and volunteer spots, we expect projects to fill quickly with waitlists. If you need to cancel, please email outreach@voc.org as soon as possible so we can free your spot for another volunteer and have a full workforce. If you are waitlisted for multiple projects, please call us at 303-715-1010 ext. 116 and we can help you find an open project, if available. Where You'll Be: Flagstaff Mountain is the 4th highest peak in the foothills bordering the unique town of Boulder, Colorado. Accessible by trail and by road, Flagstaff Mountain is a popular spot for recreationists and sightseers. With a mild grade, the Tenderfoot Trail is suitable for hikers and equestrians of all experience levels. What You'll Do: Join a group of volunteers on this Wednesday project to reroute the Tenderfoot Trail. The current trail offers beautiful views and a wide variety of flora and fauna, but it is a hazard to users in sections. Working with volunteers ages 16+, tasks may include finalizing the new section of trail that has been roughed-in by a machine prior to the project or restoring and closing the old trail so that visitors use the new trail. Why It Matters: The new section of trail will provide a safe experience for visitors while protecting the surrounding natural environment. Additionally, closing the old trail, prevents further damage and erosion. With hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, your trail improvements will be appreciated by many people for years to come! We were shooting for 40 but recruitment has been hard this fall. we only had 4 no shows. We got done more work than the city had planned so we ended up opening a bug section of the reroute that they werent planning to open until the weekend. At the beginning of the day, we hauled up all the fencing materials from the bottom of the trail up the super steep old trail about a quarter of a mile. we did this in 2 trips and the city thought it would take much longer. The trail closure section (190 feet) was a lot of work. they wanted it all decompacted 6 inches, and the trail was anywhere from2-4 feet wide in sections. then we topped it with more dirt that they had staged there and toped that with duff. it took most of the day. we also staged huge piles of duff elsewhere along the new trail where they will use them later to naturalize. i did not know how to quantify this in the accomplishments. we had wonderful weather and a great crew. Successes and Challenges: completed more work than was planned Lessons Learned: Special Notes: Stewardship Education: the city talked in the morning about why the trail is being rerouted Key Concerns or Comments from Staff or Volunteers: all really enjoyed the project from what i heard. one mentioned that it was her first time and getting registered was really easy.
