Where You'll Be:
Valued for its remote feel and breathtaking beauty, the James Peak Wilderness encompasses 14,000 acres to the south and west of the town of Nederland, not far from the tiny community of Rollinsville. It is home to high alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and its namesake James Peak, which sits at 13,294 feet above sea level.
What You'll Do:
On this half-day project, volunteers ages 8+ will spend the morning digging up invasive oxeye daisies from the trailhead and surrounding areas. This is a moderately sized project with about 50 volunteers led by Jim Jacobson, a volunteer who has attended nearly 200 VOC projects since 1991 and has been leading invasive plant removal projects in the Boulder Ranger District for years. Your participation is part of a multi-year effort (nearly 15 years!) to improve the ecosystem's health and this is a great opportunity for families and volunteers of all abilities to make an immediate difference in one of Colorado's treasured Wilderness Areas.
Why It Matters:
Although pretty, the oxeye daisy is an aggressive and highly destructive weed. VOC volunteers have worked for over a decade to remove hundreds of thousands of flowers and seeds from the East Portal access point to the James Peak Wilderness. By joining this important effort, volunteers will help promote the health of native plants and prevent the weed from advancing further into the Wilderness Area.
About Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC)
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Founded in 1984 to motivate and enable people to become active stewards of Colorado's natural resources, VOC has engaged nearly 128,000 people in more than 1,000 volunteer projects for a donated labor value of $26 million. Through award-winning youth and volunteer programs, leadership training, capacity-building programs, and collaborative efforts with nonprofits and land management agencies, VOC is an invaluable resource in Colorado, especially as our outdoor stewardship needs are approaching near-crisis levels. completed roughly the same amount of work as past year's
useful for CLs to have radios
Challenges
Lots of no shows
Lessons Learned: Don't ask the Forest Service about hard hats! They don't require them unless we ask about them.
Jim thinks all tool managers should always pack a basic/minimal toolkit (wrench, pliers, hammer, screwdriver, etc.) -> he needed it in order to take down the broken popup tent. he said it was a good practice for any tool manager to have
Special Notes: Bev Baker and the rest of the organizing team (except Jim) mentioned that they want to transition out of the project (getting too old for it). They are trying to recruit folks to take their places, but we might need to do additional lifting to ensure a continued project
