Start Date-End Date: 07/16/2022-07/17/2022 Land Manager Office: USFS - Sulphur Ranger District Land Manager Contact: Sean Burke Funding Partner: Programmatic Partner: Headwaters Trails Alliance Summary: More spots available on Sunday! Restore a popular trail to a waterfall near Winter Park. Description: Project photo courtesy of blog.winterparkresort.com Where You'll Be: An estimated 30,000 visitors use the Jim Creek Trail each year, which is no surprise given its proximity to Winter Park and plentiful recreation opportunities. From a stunning hike in the summer months to a cross-country ski and snowshoe destination in the winter, this trail offers something for everyone. Many visitors trek to the waterfall at the trail's endpoint, while others use it to access a strenuous ascent to summit James Peak. What You'll Do: Work with volunteers ages 18+ to repair the popular Jim Creek Trail, which was heavily damaged by a major windstorm last fall. This will be a physically demanding project as volunteers will have to hike at least 1.5 miles to the project site, with the furthest site being 3 miles in. The majority of work will be in tight, challenging areas and will include moving large rocks to armor the trail surface, armor drainages, and build steps. Your hard work will be rewarded with free campsites at the G-Lot Winter Park parking area, and hot meals provided by our volunteer Crew Chefs. A shuttle will be provided from the campground to the trailhead each day; the campground is also close to Fraser and Winter Park for those looking to enjoy a trip to town. Why It Matters: Heavy maintenance is needed to restore the Jim Creek Trail. Your work will help repair muddy spots, erosion, and trail braiding to help provide a clear, safe, and sustainable trail to the waterfall. This project was physically demanding project as volunteers hiked at least 1.5 miles to the project site, with the furthest site being 3 miles in. There were over 50 drains built/maintained and many large rocks were moved to armor the trail. Successes and Challenges: Many new drains were built, and many existing drains received much needed maintenance. Many social trails were closed. There were large sections of the trail that were swampy with thick mud. These sections were drained and then armored with large rocks.
