Summary: Build a turnpike to reduce erosion on this fire-impacted trail.
Description: Project photo by Jay Poules
Where You'll Be:
Located just over Ute Pass, the Williams Fork area is a true hidden gem that sits between Summit County and Grand County. Although the trails in this area are accessible from the popular towns of Silverthorne and Dillon, they offer a remote, wilderness-type feel.
What You'll Do:
Volunteers ages 18+ are invited to join us for this trail restoration weekend! Over the course of two days, you'll work to build a turnpike to elevate the trail and reduce erosion. Campsites will be provided at the Sugar Loaf Campground along with meals from our volunteer Crew Chefs.
Anyone that attends a VOC volunteer opportunity in August, September, and October will be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a $300 SCHEELS Gift Card. The more opportunities you attend, the more entries you will earn. Good luck!
Why It Matters:
It will take a concentrated effort to restore this area's trails and habitats after the devastating fire. Volunteers will be a huge part of that effort, and your participation this weekend will go a long way in making a difference!
About Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC)
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is the state's oldest, largest, and leading outdoor stewardship nonprofit organization. Founded in 1984 to motivate and enable people to become active stewards of Colorado's natural resources, VOC has engaged nearly 128,000 people in more than 1,000 volunteer projects for a donated labor value of $26 million. Project Summary:
Successes and Challenges: Even though we didn't hit our anticipated volunteer numbers, it ended up being exactly the right sized group. I wouldn't have wanted any additional people--there were pinch points in the work where a lot of people were standing around waiting for something to do as it was, just due to the nature turnpikes being a cramped work space. But it was helpful having so many hands to gather rocks and material fill from the borrow pits so ultimately I wouldn't have wanted fewer people either. It was just right.
It was also the right number of people for the camping. We probably shouldn't do projects with any more than 25-30 people max at this campsite.
